COVERED IN PAINT – NOT JUST LITERALLY

Every Artist has a story about how or what inspired them to be where they are. Like so many Artists I often asked myself, “why me?” How is that I can do what I do when others cannot. I came to realize this is a gift… but, for what purpose? The answer changed the lives of myself, my family, many other local Artists and The Community of Watseka.

It's All In A Name. One afternoon while working with a fellow Artist at one of the area grade schools giving a special workshop to 1st graders (who normally have no art classes due to State budget cuts) we were trying to ponder a name for my new Studio (if I ever had the gutts to go pro). As we were cleaning up, Rose, my fellowArtist threw a bunch of loaded  paint brushes into the sink as I was washing them. The paint spattered up all over me. She looked to me and said, "Oh I'm sorry, I've got you covered in paint!" There was the "Ah" moment. We both just - stopped and knew! There's my name. Anyone who knows me just knows. Everything I own is covered in paint. My boyfriend banned me to the garage after getting oil based enamel on the new carpet in the living room. Then I got paint on his car...

Don’t Dream It …Do It. Beginning in June of 2011, I closed my eyes, pinched my nose, held my breath and jumped into a 6 month lease on a little 375 sq.ft. commercial space in the out skirts of Wat-seka. IL . Surrounded by cornfields and implement companies, who would have thought there would have been a call for an Art Gallery or an Artist who paints on anything and EVERYTHING. For me... Art isn't just on canvas. From the age of 17 my medium has been paint, any paint, all paint.  From canvas to clothing, walls to windows, collectables and race cars too…I paint whatever the commission call for. The response was overwhelming. I outgrew that little spot inside of 4 months and began shopping for a larger studio space and hopefully a separate gallery area that would enable me to bring in other Artists to join me. ( I realized the need for this when I was approached by several local Artists in the area who were hoping to consign their work in my little space but, I just didn’t have the room.) The new home of Covered In Paint Art Studio & Gallery seemed to almost land in my lap one day while I was out shopping for things to paint on...The Village Antique Mall was going out of business and this prime location was positioned downtown in the heart of the city. It was right across the street from the Watseka Theatre, the local venue for performing arts. What a perfect way to begin an Artisan's Alley.

Making It A Reality....sometimes, reality bites! We got the keys on January 1st. 2012.  The new location offered 3 huge front rooms for Gallery Space and two wonderful studio areas in the rear! This was going to be Great!  I sparked a deal with the landlord that if we cleaned up the place, you know, a little paint maybe some new light fixtures... he would put in new carpet. This deal kept the rent affordable and by doing the work ourselves we were able to keep costs down. I failed to mention that nothing had been done to this place in 30 years!  I failed to mention because I failed to know! What a pit! We began gutting the 3 front rooms and from January 1st thru March 11th we worked every day (and night) turning this beautiful Gallery into what it is today. We ended replacing the ceiling tiles when we came to discover that they were so old, painting them did nothing and the yellow came right through.

In prepping the floors we found 3 layers of carpet and padding (one on top of the other). Pulling that up was a fun time had by all. When it came time to patch n prep the walls...I did actually cry tears a couple of times. There were so many holes and every time I thought I had them all we would find another.  The carpet guys coming down from Chicago had to reschedule twice. The track lights went on back order. We went $500.00 over budget and as is the case with any remodel nothing went as planned.  Finally on March 9th the carpet was in and we were done. The Gallery was ready for Art! The locals are awed by the difference. It makes the 4 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint along with all the blisters and back aches worth it now. I must admit though, many days came and went that I thought we would NEVER finish. Oh, and now I know how to lay flooring tile!

Somebody Pinch Me. I contacted all of the Artists I had been lining up for this. We got every piece where it needed to be and on the week of March 12th (my birthday) we opened our doors to the public! On the evening of March 17th we hosted a Wine & Cheese Grand Opening/Open House reception! I was overwhelmed, for such a tiny community there were over 350 people who came out to show support. This area is chalk full of Art enthusiasts. Every Artist sold pieces that evening and this dream come true of mine as I soon discovered was their dream come true as well.

Drawing On A Dream. Now after operating in the new location for almost 5 months and celebrating our 1 year anniversary, Covered In Paint Art Studio & Gallery is home to over 30 local Artists.  You will find Hand blown glass, fused art glass, stained glass, watercolor, acrylic & oil painting, mixed media, jewelry, pottery, woodworking, candles, fiber and photography. We are looking to add a female blacksmith this fall! The Artists offer classes and workshops in their medium. We also offer private lessons for students which is gem for the area since art was taken from our area schools. The Gallery is a wonderful place to begin that special date or just a refreshing experience for anyone who appreciates the arts.

Look us up on Facebook to find the latest events and happenings at Covered In Paint where when it comes to paint (or art) we've got you covered.
