hen someone thinks of a used bookstore it is most often in terms of leather bound sets of books with gilt decoration or bookshelves lined with first editions. But in these days of Kindles and Nooks most booksellers are looking for ways to expand into different areas of specialty.  Several years ago Babbitt’s Books started to amass a collection of non-book paper or, as it is called in the trade, ephemera. In book terms ephemera refers to items that were printed and only meant to be used for the short term and not meant to be saved.

phemera categories include postcards, menus, maps, pamphlets, ticket stubs, pro-grams, calendars, telegrams, bookmarks and the list goes on and on. In the pursuit of ephemera I have often dived into dumpsters. I will go to a house to buy books and will tell the owners that I will go through their dumpster and pay for any items that I find.

hus I saved from destruc-tion, a 1964 program to a Yankees ballgame listing all the famous players of the day

and a signed Jack Benny concert program. We always fan older books for bits of ephemera hiding within.

nce I was cataloguing a book and a slip of paper fell out. It was a ship to ship telegram announcing the ship wreck of the Andrea Doria and alerting the nearby ship to look for survivors. We always emphasize to our customers selling estates and collections to not throw away any paper items until we can look at them. Recycling may be important but some items that look innocuous could be historically important and deserve a second look.
